The Republic of Equatorial Guinea has launched its campaign to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

Officials from Equatorial Guinea, including the Secretary of State from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Representative to the UN, Anatolio Ndong Mba, attended the meeting of the African Group to garner support for their country.

The Secretary of State pointed out the high position Equatorial Guinea holds in Africa and the advancements it has made over the years in health, education, and infrastructure in line with the Horizon 2020 plan.

The Permanent Representative to the UN has called for equitable representation in the Security Council before, citing the need for the UN to adapt to new challenges and obstacles in the world today.

Representatives and Ambassadors from the African Group will vote on the candidate for the Security Council, who will then have the support of the African Union.

Equatorial Guinea has never held the position on the Security Council. The Republic of Ivory Coast is vying for the position as well.
