The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, HE Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, was recognized for his academic and cultural contributions to the country and was named the first Spanish Language Honorary Academic by the Equatoguinean Academy of the Spanish Language (AEGLE).
In his speech, the President stressed the importance of the AEGLE in Equatorial Guinea, as well as the culture of Spanish literature and use of the Spanish language.
The President also acknowledged the cultural significance of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, and announced that one of the central roundabouts in Bata will be named after the esteemed Spanish literary figure.
The event was attended by members of the AEGLE, the Equatorial Guinea National University, high level officials from the Spanish-speaking diplomatic corps, the PDGE General Secretary, and members of Parliament and Government.
The President created the AEGLE to promote and cultivate the Spanish language and distribute Spanish literature in Equatorial Guinea.
The appointment took place at the Ngolo Palace of International Congresses and Conferences in Bata.
