The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is active at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York this week, participating in the vote to elect members of the UN Convention on the Continental Shelf.The vote was to elect 21 new members to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, a body within the governing organization established to codify the rules of international law and establish the rights of sovereign states relating to continental shelves.
Permanent Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to the UN, Anatolio Ndong Mba, participated in the vote, which elected four African countries: Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, and Nigeria.
The Ambassador also participated in the election of two African countries to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea: Cape Verde and Algeria.
The International Tribunal is an intergovernmental organization that establishes the legal framework for all ocean space, its uses, and resources.
Equatorial Guinea was recently elected as a non-permanent representative to the UN Security Council in an historic vote.
The UN Security Council is the governing body within the UN responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. The Council is comprised of fifteen Members, who determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression, resolve disputes by peaceful means or recommend terms of settlement, and impose sanctions or authorize force when necessary.
