Equatorial Guinea President Celebrates Launch of Ceiba-2 Fiber Optic Cable, Expands Telecommunications Connectivity in Africa

The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, HE Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, celebrated the launch of the Ceiba-2 fiber optic cable as it further expands telecommunications connectivity in Africa in line with Equatorial Guinea’s Horizon 2020 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The President was joined by the Deputy Director General for Telecommunications Infrastructure in Equatorial Guinea (GITGE) and the Minister for Transport, the Postal Service, and Telecommunications, among other Government officials.

The Ceiba-2 cable, which was fully financed by Government in partnership with Huawei, connects Malabo to Kribi, Cameroon and Bata, Equatorial Guinea, in addition to connecting Central Africa to Europe.

The Management of Public Telecommunications Infrastructure (GIGTE) offers fiber optic connectivity and Internet services for the education, economic, and social development of Equatorial Guinea in line with the country’s Horizon 2020 goals.

The improvement of connectivity increases job opportunities for Equatorial Guineans, business sales, education and training for students and professionals, and communication within Equatorial Guinea and with the rest of the world.

The fiber optic underwater and land cable connects Equatorial Guinea’s mainland and island of Bioko to high-speed international Internet services.


The advent of the new telecommunications services increases connectivity, speed, and capacity, all with a lower cost, for the Equatorial Guineans.
