Electoral delegations from the African Union (AU) and the Africa Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP) are overseeing the senatorial, legislative and municipal elections in Equatorial Guinea to ensure the electoral process complies with the African charter on democracy, elections and governance aimed at strengthening the institutions for a fair, free and transparent electoral development.

The government of Equatorial Guinea invited these delegations as part of their efforts to improve the electoral process. Following the elections, these delegations will hold press conferences to share their observations.

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogoaddressed the local and international media in a press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malabo. In reference to the elections, he said, “This electoral campaign has enjoyed good civic behavior and organization. Elections have been carried through effectively.”

This year’s electoral campaign has seen greater participation from Equatorial Guinea’s youth. “Our youth has exercised their right to vote. These elections have provided an opportunity for them to learn more about the country's political process. They are the heirs of Equatorial Guinea,” concluded President Obiang.

Equatorial Guinea citizens went to the polls today, followed the electoral process without any reported difficulties. The Ministry of Interior will announce initial vote counts tonight. The final results of the elections will be announced next week.
