The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, HE Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, was active at the 12th Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Summit.

The President, who delivered his speech and interventions in Portuguese, highlighted the efforts made by the Government to include the language in both the media and the education system.

The President also noted Equatorial Guinea’s ongoing VI Table for National Political Dialogue, which he recently opened to all leaders from constitutional bodies, members of government, all political parties, and representatives from international institutions. The President also granted amnesty to all political leaders in order to expand the country’s democratic process.

The VI Table for National Dialogue, led by the President, brought together high-level government officials, political parties, and diaspora political activists. The Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General and the Representative of the European Union (EU) also participated in the dialogue sessions.

Equatorial Guinea, a proud member of the CPLP, joined the organization in 2014, joining the members Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.

Equatorial Guinea was the sixth African country to join the CPLC, which was founded in 1996 and now has nine member countries. The organization aims to promote cooperation among the member countries. Equatorial Guinea was an observer from 2006 to 2014. Portuguese has become the third official language of the country, following Spanish and French.

The Summit, which coincided with the 22ndanniversary of the CPLP’s foundation, was held in Cape Verde.
