The Republic of Equatorial Guinea, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Anatolio Ndong Mba, called for the urgent defense of human rights in the Syrian Arab Republic during a UN Security Council session.

Equatorial Guinea highlighted strong concern over the situation in the Syrian province of Idlib and the resulting humanitarian consequences should a large-scale military offensive be launched in the region.

Equatorial Guinea, in line with the approach put forth by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, called for all parties to act with moderation and give priority to the protection of innocent civilians in the area, as well as protect the civilian population, allow freedom of movement, and protect the civil infrastructure, including medical and education facilities.

Equatorial Guinea last week at the Security Council urged human rights protection in Libya, as well as the need for inclusive dialogue in Nicaragua.

Equatorial Guinea has made great strides over the years and significant progress on human rights, including the temporary amnesty against the death penalty, the plan of action to combat human trafficking, the implementation of the Children’s Parliament, the improvement of education for all Equatorial Guineans, and the complete abolition of child labor.

Equatorial Guinea has ratified numerous international conventions regarding human rights, and is active at the UN as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, where it strongly advocates for peace and security throughout the world. Equatorial Guinea at the UN has urged its fellow UN member states to prohibit the sale of arms to mercenaries and other organizations who are considered human rights violators.
