Agapito Mba Mokuy, Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, aims to develop programs to provide more employment opportunities for young people throughout Africa and reduce emigration as part of his platform as he runs for the Presidency of the African Union Commission.

Minister Mba Mokuy has placed special emphasis on policies directed toward young people. In a recent interview he said, “Youth is one of the priorities of the Equatorial Guinea candidacy. Why do young people emigrate? I believe that the African Union Commission should support the Heads of State with the adoption of programs that allow the creation of more employment on the African continent. We have this capacity; we have to strengthen it. Many of our young people leave because they cannot find jobs. For that reason, priority must be given to youth directly or indirectly, to deal with these issues, and the question of youth and the question of employment".

He stressed the idea of intellectually empowering young people, as many other countries do in order to best use their resources. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also raised two basic issues confronting the African continent. One is that the need to eradicate the "culture of wa.," He said,  "Africa should not forget its idiosyncrasies, that it is a culture of dialogue and traditional values." In addition, he called on the African Union to finance itself through wholly African money. Currently, it has 80% foreign capital.”

Botswana and Uganda are also being considered for the Presidency of the African Union.
Minister Mba Mokuy concluded the interview by highlighting the importance of remaining united for a single cause, Pan-Africanism: "In order for this dream to become a reality, the African countries have to take steps to ensure there is order, stability and security. President Obiang Nguema Masobo said that we need to call on Africa to show seriousness, dignity, respect and solidarity".

The Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea Presents Complaint to the International Court of Justice Against the Republic of France

The Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) expressed full and unconditional support for the Second Vice President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, regarding the process lawsuit submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague against the Republic of France.

The PDGE welcomed the opportunity to defend the Republic before the ICJ, an institution that treats matters with due process and the necessary objectivity and impartiality.

The Republic of Equatorial Guinea submitted the process lawsuit to the ICJ against France for the controversy created by the National Financial Prosecuting Authority of France (PNF) against the Mr. Nguema Obiang. Equatorial Guinea stated that the procedure by the PNF constitutes an attack against the immunity of Mr. Nguema Obiang, who has the right under international law to which French courts have refused.

In detail, the PDGE expressed the support the Second Vice President of the Republic, Head of Defense and State Security, and National President of the Federation of Youth, against international instigations.

The PDGE highlighted the improbable situation in which a court in Equatorial Guinea or any nation in Africa could indict a French Vice President. That a court outside Equatorial Guinea could judge a high-level representative of the Republic is interfering with the sovereign nature of the Republic.

The PDGE also expressed support for the legal representatives of Equatorial Guinea in defending the interests of the Republic before the ICJ.

The PDGE expressed gratitude to the UCJ for admitting the process and hopes that such an important issue between two countries will be treated with neutral objectivity and impartiality necessary to respect the sovereignty of two nations in litigation.

The issue of sovereignty and non-interference in the affairs of another nation is one of the basic pillars of independence and freedom, which Equatorial Guinea fully supports.

Equatorial Guinea's Biodiversity Featured in Audubon Magazine

Audubon Magazine recently carried a feature story on the captivating biodiversity found in Equatorial Guinea's Island of Bioko. The article highlighted the island's one of a kind bid species and scientific efforts to catalogue previously unknown species in a recent expedition.

The expedition was led by the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program, Equatorial Guinea's oldest conservation organisation, which is operated by the National University of Equatorial Guinea and Drexel University in the U.S.

The magazine reported that Equatorial Guinea is the ideal place for biologists due to its mainland jungles that boast rare animals like picathartes, chimpanzees, elephants, and gorillas. "Bioko is even more intriguing. Islands aren't usually flush with primates or forest birds, which are unlikely to cross open waters and colonize new shores. Bioko, however, was part of the mainland until 12,000 years ago, when rising sea levels cut off what had been a peninsula. It's an ark whose residents have evolved completely isolated from their counterparts on the mainland. Today at least two of the island's birds - Fernando Po Batis and Fernando Po Speirops - are found only here and some of its three dozen or so avian subspecies may well be unique species worthy of protection."

In addition to the study of indigenous bird species only found in Equatorial Guinea, the program tracks primates and marine turtles in an effort to catalogue the country's rich biodiversity.

Equatorial Guinea is a member of the Commission for the Conservation of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (COMIFAC). As part of the government's efforts to preserve the country's ecosystems and biodiversity, Equatorial Guinea participates in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEO) and is a signatory of the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

Eric Moussambani Malonga, born in Equatorial Guinea in 1978, gained worldwide recognition for his swimming performance at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Eric, who later became known as “Eric the Eel,” competed in the men’s 100 meters freestyle race at the Sydney Olympic Games for Equatorial Guinea, despite never having raced that far before. Eric trained in hotel pool in Equatorial Guinea that was only 20 meters long; when he arrived in Sydney for the Olympics he said he had never seen an Olympic-size pool. Eric was invited to the Olympics as part of a program that allowed athletes from developing countries to participate directly without qualifying.

The winner of the 100-meter freestyle race was the Dutch van der Hoogenband with a time of 47.84 seconds. Eric clocked 1.52.72.

The race will be remembered for Eric’s strength of spirit to represent the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and swim on to complete the race, despite being an amateur on the Olympic stage. The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are currently underway, and Robel Kiros Habte from Ethiopia has gained attention for his swimming as an amateur representing a developing country. Habte even finished the 100 meters in 1.04.95, faster than Eric. But the world will never forget Eric the Eel from Equatorial Guinea and the courage he displayed in 2000.

Equatorial Guinea Leads Trade Facilitation in Central Africa

Equatorial Guinea led trade facilitation in Central Africa in 2015 through a Government program to improve the investment climate. The new program will position the country as a major player in global trade and drive the economy of the west African nation.

Equatorial Guinea has adopted the single-window system for the registration of companies and corporations to streamline trade inflows into the country and vastly improve the country’s ease of doing business ranking with the World Bank.

On 7 September, Equatorial Guinea’s Prime Minister’s office issued an executive order to reduce the registration process from over 15 procedures to four simple steps:

Notary legalizes company statutes;
Register public deed in the Commercial Registry;
Apply for tax registration; and
Apply for registration with the corresponding Ministry (based on business purpose).

By reducing the number of steps, individuals and foreign companies can establish companies, corporations, partnerships, and branches in Equatorial Guinea easier and more affordable.

The number of days to complete the registration will be reduced from 120 days to 10 days.

Additionally, the costs of registering a business will be cut by almost 45 percent.

The Government of Equatorial Guinea has made it easier and more attractive for entrepreneurs to register their businesses, as well as foreign investors, and to comply with laws and regulations by simplifying the process. This Government program will stimulate investment in key sectors to drive economic growth in Equatorial Guinea.
