The Republic of Equatorial Guinea’s permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York highlighted the need to reform the Security Council in regards to equitable geographical rotation.

The Permanent Representative of Equatorial Guinea to the UN, Anatolio Ndong Mba, stressed the importance of reforming the Council to accurately represent African nations according to the needs of the African Union, the Ezulwini Consensus, and the Sirte Declaration.

Ndong Mba highlighted that equitable representation would lend genuine legitimacy of decision making to the Security Council and that the Government of Equatorial Guinea remain committed in their support of the Council, as peace and security are necessary conditions for development.

The Mission also reaffirmed Equatorial Guinea’s commitment to being a non-permanent member of the Security Council and called for support to reach this goal by June of 2017.

The Swedish Foreign Minister and President of the Security Council, Margot Wallstrom, chaired the meeting at the UN.
