The Republic of Equatorial Guinea, represented by the Permanent Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations, Anatolio Ndong Mba, officially joined the United Nations Security Council this week as a non-permanent member.
Equatorial Guinea was elected to the Security Council after an historic vote earlier in 2017 and is joined by the Ivory Coast, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Peru, and Poland.
Equatorial Guinea’s candidacy for the seat was endorsed by the African Union and the country pledged to strive toward global sustainable peace so the UN development objectives can be achieved.
The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – and ten non-permanent members elected every two years.
Equatorial Guinea, along with the other new members, will have a strong voice on the Security Council with issues dealing with international peace and security.
Equatorial Guinea will be active on the Security Council for its term from 2018-2019.
