The Republic of Equatorial Guinea Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Anatolio Ndong Mba, called for equitable representation and reform of the UN Security Council.
Equatorial Guinea, a new non-permanent member of the Security Council, has long called for two permanent and five non-permanent seats for Africa in order to have an equitable geographical rotation for the organizational body to more accurately represent the continent.
“It is totally inconceivable and unjustifiable, that a continent like Africa, which has more than one billion people, more UN member states, and more problems addressed by the Security Council, does not have until the date of a single permanent seat on the council,” said the Ambassador. “In this regard, it should be noted that the demand for seats for Africa in the Security Council should not be interpreted in any way as an inflexible or stubborn position, but rather as a just demand and an inalienable right in today's world and, above all, everything as I have indicated previously, in a world organization like the UN, guarantor of principles of justice, good governance and rights.”
Equatorial Guinea call for wide representation of Africa in all the decision-making bodies of the UN, including the Security Council, received support from the Permanent Representative of Egypt and Sierra Leone.
Equatorial Guinea is a member of the Committee of Ten (C-10), a group of countries in the African Union (AU) who are in charge of negotiations regarding equal treatment and representation at the UN.
