Representatives of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations (UN) Security Council urged the need for constructive and open dialogue to solve the ongoing Syria conflict.

Equatorial Guinea highlighted the serious need for a peaceful resolution in the country to address the humanitarian situation as the recent UN ceasefire failed to reach a peaceful conclusion.

The General Secretary of the UN, Antonio Guterres, joined Equatorial Guinea by calling the situation unjust and unacceptable to the international community.

Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cote d’Ivoire, and Peru, among others, also joined Equatorial Guinea in outlining the need for the international community to implement unanimous actions to restore peace in Syria.

The meeting was also attended via videoconference by the special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, who detailed the situation of negotiations on the ground.

Equatorial Guinea is active at the UN and, as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has called for a peaceful resolution to the Yemen conflict, mechanisms for peace in the Middle East, and protection of vital infrastructures against terrorist attacks.

Equatorial Guinea is committed to peaceful and sustainable development in the world.
