The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, HE Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, highlighted this week the importance of recognizing the important work done by scientists at the IV UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in Life Sciences.

The President also asked for the prolongation of the Prizes in order to continue to recognize important scientific research as it is intrinsically linked to numerous problems regarding the insecurity of human life.

The Prizes were awarded to Professor Rui Luis Gonçalves Dos Reis from Portugal, Professor Ivan Antonio Izquierdo from Brazil, and the Organization for Agricultural Research at the Volcani Center in Israel.

The event was attended by high-level Government, UNESCO officials, and African leaders, including the Mayoress of Malabo, the Minister for Education, the Director General of UNESCO, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, and the President of the African Union (AU), in addition to members of civil society.

The ceremony was held at the Sipopo Conference Center in Malabo, a state-of-the-art facility that has hosted numerous international gatherings in the past, including the African Union Summit and the Africa-Arab Economic Forum, among many others.
