The Republic of Equatorial Guinea has made food access and pervasive hunger in Africa a top priority. The department of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, and the Environment has pledged to eradicate hunger in the African continent by 2025 to improve economic diversification and improve food security with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). This initiative is in line with the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the 2014 Malabo Declaration.

The outline demonstrates the Government of Equatorial Guinea’s commitment to diversifying the economy and agriculture and will inform the Country Program Framework from 2018 to 2023.

The main objectives in the Program are the improvement of living conditions in rural areas and fair employment through increased agricultural production; the evaluation and marketing of food products and access to bank credit; the improvement of the population’s nutrition through monitoring and management of food access and security; and the strengthening of institutions related to agriculture and food security.

Equatorial Guinea has called for the continued financing of the African Solidarity Trust Fund, a financial tool designed to fight hunger, poverty, and increase food security, at the recent 30th Session of the FAO.

The FAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.
